Astrologer Tanja Ristovski in an interview

Astrologer Tanja Ristovski in an interview with Verena Arnold (

Tanja, when did astrology come into your life? How did you come to your own method of interpretation and how do you define the goal of your counseling? What do you like about consultations?

About thirty years ago. Through my artistic training I realized that people see differently and differently interpret what they see. When we, the art students of sculpture, would make a portrait of a model, all the portraits were very different and yet all were a faithful representation of the model. That aroused my curiosity about how people differ from each other. I wanted to know why the perception of different people can be different and how it comes to different interpretations of what is being seen. So I became increasingly interested in individual motivations that hide behind the same or similar behavior. Psychology provided an explanatory model that I felt to be a bit tight. Only in connection with the astrology, especially the kind that I discovered later with my teacher Noel Tyl, the conception of human life and being became complete for me.

My goal in counseling is to help clients to better understand themselves and the ceherences in their lives, which helps them to better utilize their personal strengths and realize their full potential. The exciting thing about it for me is that I gain a better understanding of life and of people after every astrological consultation. And with each client, I expand my astrological knowledge.

Many people do not dare to seek astrological advice. Is that the case, because they are afraid that something negative is written in the stars? How do you counter this fear? Why do you think some people resist astrology?

I know people who actually have this fear and therefore would never come to see an astrologer. But such negative expectations have their reasons in an individual psychological background and not in astrology. Therefore no argument can influence such an attitude and I do not try to change it either.

There are also people who resist astrology because they consider it nonsense. If somebody addresses me about astrology with this attitude, I argue only argue, if he or she also shows curiosity. Most people nowadays have a distorted idea of what astrology is because different dubious practices are falsely offered under the name of "astrology." But I do not waste my time with people whose sole purpose is to dogmatically stick to their own point of view, or to engage in discussions only for the sake of belligerance or becaous ethey enjoy arguing. These people believe to defend the Enlightenment, but they lack the awareness that the dominant positivist and empirical thinking traditions, which are limited to empirically verifiable phenomena, have no absolute claim to insight.

Does astrology serve as an instrument of prognosis? Can astrology also predict concrete events? Do the planetary constellations have any influence on world events? Can astrologers even foresee the fate of countries and their rulers?

Astrology can also be used as an instrument for forecasting. But the astrological forecast has nothing to do with a crystal ball or clairvoyance.

Astrology is one of many explanatory models. It is based on the hypothesis that our human world is mathematically explainable and that different phenomena are related. The simplest example of such a relationship is the Earth's orbit around the Sun, which people on Earth experience as seasons and which influences their activities.

The art of prognosis consists firstly of observing the movement of planets and stars. This movement is constant and can be calculated and predicted. Seondly, the art of prognosis lies in the observation of human life itself. It consists of events and phenomena that are not constant and are subject to many changes and influences. Therefore, astrology can not give kind of "crystal ball predictions", but we can compare astrological forcasts to weather  or economic forecasts.

How can the layman distinguish reputable astrology from frivolous "fairground astrology" and a good one from a bad astrologer? How do you know if an astrologer is well educated and able? And why do you think so many people in the hands of this "fairground astrology"?

How can the layman distinguish reputable astrology from frivolous "fairground astrology" and a good one from a bad astrologer? How do you know if an astrologer is well educated and able? And why do you think so many people give themselves in the hands of this "fairground astrology"?

To make a horoscope, you need the date, the place and the time of birth. A credible astrologer will always want to check the specified birth time and analyze the calculated horoscope, which takes a certain amount of time. If somebody wants to consult the client immediately, on first contact with clients, such counceling has nothing to do with astrology.

Whether an astrologer is well-educated can be recognized by what he or she understands with examining the time of birth, for example. It is done by means of astrological techniques.

The question of whether an astrologer is capable, should be left to the individual judgment of the client.

As you say yourself, there are also people who are satisfied with "fair market astrology". Otherwise they would not consume it. They probably like simple answers that do not require rethinking or working on oneself or own circumstances.

I recently had a client who previously attended a New Moon lecture with an astrologer. Afterwards the participants were offered a 'mini astrological reading'. This means that the horoscope is calculated on-site by the computer and that table-ready interpretations are given. The astrologer told this lady that next year will be difficult for her. What exactly "a difficult year" means was left to her.

This lady came to me with some fears and with a negative expectations. Why? Because it is one's own experiences and personality profile that play a big role in what someone calls "difficult". In addition, if something should become "difficult", then astrology can identify those areas of life to which the difficulty relates. In a serious astrological consultation, the strategies and ways to overcome the possible difficulties are also considered.

This is an example of why I find the fairground astrology irresponsible, and why counseling can not take ten minutes. Apart from the fact that astrologer needs time for a detailed analysis of the horoscope.
